Kaitlyn Kefoury led the SCCS elementary girls basketball team (B team) in scoring with six points, but her impact on defense was even greater. Kefoury hounded opposing ball handlers on her way to 10 steals.
With her help, the Cardinals topped Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH), 18-10, in the team’s season debut on Jan. 17.
The Cardinals overcame some early game jitters to claim the win. Alyssa Calleros scored the only basket for the Cardinals in the first half, but after the break the story changed.
The Cardinals stepped up their defensive pressure and took advantage of steals from Sofia Cuevas and Kefoury. The team’s quickness proved too much for OLPH; SCCS erupted for 16 second-half points — mostly on fast breaks.
The Cardinals only carry five girls on the squad, so conditioning will be a factor all season. So far, they seem up to the challenge.
“I am so proud of the girls!” said SCCS coach David Caldwell. “They showed great determination in the game and created scoring opportunities with their hustle.”
Kaitlyn Kefoury: 6 points, 10 steals
